When it comes to condo dwellers’ design concerns, maximizing room storage counts as one of their top challenges. However, whether you are a solo dweller living in a studio unit or a family of five occupying a three-bedroom loft, smart storage practices can go a long way in managing mess in your home, and even creating more visual balance in a space that would be otherwise taken over by clutter. In fact, size should never be a limit. A good place to start when managing storage? Interior designer Kelly Wearstler advises one to liken home design to “designing a boat,” wherein every inch is carefully considered. In this article, we share tips for maximizing storage in your home, whatever its size.

Take advantage of vertical space

Does your condo unit have high ceilings? If it does, make sure to utilize your vertical space. If you are working with a professional interior designer, consider having bespoke storage cabinets furbished.

Floating shelves is another way to take advantage of generous wall height. You can use this to display books, art, dinnerware, and other tchotchkes. This is a great way to personalize your space however make sure to curate the items you choose to display so that they do not overpower a room.

As for bedrooms with high ceilings, consider loft furniture. Go beyond bunk beds and look for pieces that integrate a sleeping area on top and say, a space for a study table below. Some custom lofts even feature stairs that double as storage.

Look for multifunctional furniture

Furniture that doubles as storage is very easy to come by. Upholstered footstools with built-in storage can be used to keep unsightly items like small electronics (read: your remote control). A Lift Top coffee table comes with a pop up mechanism, so you can work or study on it. For your guest bedroom, an elegant and footprint-saving way to provide more sleeping space is through an ottoman that folds out into a bed, like this Anders Nørgaard-designed piece for Bo Concept. Furthermore, for full-sized beds, look for those with built-in shelves for storing linens or even off-season clothes.

Create multifunctional spaces

Apart from multifunctional furniture, the concept of multifunctional rooms is another smart idea for maximizing limited space. Guest rooms can double as room storage.

Oft-overlook spots in your home is another ingenious way to create more storage space. If you live in a loft, the area under the stairs can accommodate cabinets. If you have an art collection, you may even use this area to display a vignette. Furthermore, if your stair landing is fairly expansive, utilize this for a reading nook, or as an office or study area.

Finally, if you live in a studio with an open-plan layout, you can utilize storage to define areas in your home. For example, a bookshelf can be used to create a demarcation between the sleeping and the living areas.

Manage Clutter

One’s belongings are certainly expected to accumulate over time. Soon clothes, books, toys, and other items are bound to overtake your home. Remember, regardless of its size, your condominium unit has finite space. Be sure to periodically de-clutter. How often you do so, however, is entirely up to you. Experts recommend anywhere from every two weeks to four times a year.

Whichever works best for you, be ready to assess what you have, edit out what you can live without, and retain what you need and love. Marie Kondo’s popular KonMari method, which is detailed in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, revolves around identifying those pieces that spark joy. If you want to gamify decluttering, you can explore the Minimalist Game which was developed by Joshua Fields Milburn and Ryan Necodemus. The rules of the game? For one month, declutter an item in accordance to the day of the month. That’s one item on day one, two the next, and so on and so forth. By regularly organizing what you have, you can prevent room storage problems to begin with.
